What Piece of History Should I Own in an NFT?
William Faulkner said it best:
- “The past isn’t dead. It isn’t even past.”
History is a part of us. It has an influence on today and continues with us into the future.
This highlights the usefulness of converting historic moments into NFTs — and is a primary reason why we started NFThistory. By minting historical moments as NFTs and preserving them on the blockchain, we ensure history is preserved accurately — both for humanity today and for future generations.
Now, if you’re an NFT and history enthusiast, you’re in the right place. NFThistory combines both your passions.
But how do you go about choosing a piece of history to own as an NFT? There are so many dates, from the building of the pyramids to the birth of Bitcoin. It’s quite the decision, but it really depends on your tastes and reasons for using the NFThistory platform (check out our testnet by the way!).
In this article, we’ll discuss how you can choose a date to own as an NFT.
It’s all about you! Choosing the best date to own as an NFT
What brought you to the NFThistory community?
Think about what you want out of the platform.
If you’re here as an investor…
For instance, we imagine many people want some kind of return on their money. If you’re mainly here as an investor, analyze what are the most unique and important historic events. We wrote a whole article on the value of owning something unique. Just imagine if you could own a historic date like:
- The independence date of your country
- The day World War II ended
- The day humans first landed on the moon
Those dates could sell for much more than a random date on the platform. Therefore, they may make sense to bid on as an investor.
If you’re here as a history buff…
Our team at NFThistory is full of history buffs. So, the date we choose would be something very important in history.
As a team, we asked ourselves, “If we had to choose one date, what would it be?”
We decided on the 9th of November, 1989 — the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
We chose this date because it’s arguably the most important date in the second half of the 20th century. After more than 40 years of tensions in the world, the destruction, first politically and then physically, of the Wall that separated the eastern and western parts of Berlin had several meanings, all of them tremendous. It signified the triumph of freedom.
After the 9th of November, parents and children could finally hug each other, everyone could vote for any party, churches and temples were full, and the economy began to create wealth that would benefit everyone.
Isn’t this a moment worth saving for eternity?
We thought so.
If you’re here for personal reasons…
Then you may opt for a personally or culturally significant date. As we’ve discussed before, it’s our vision for the NFThistory platform to help with preserving personal memories (read the article here).
For example, if you want to give your spouse a gift, you may buy them their birthday NFT. If you have a newborn baby, you may buy their birthday as an NFT. Certainly, those NFTs would be precious to you.
You may also wish to buy culturally significant dates. For instance, if you celebrate the Lunar New Year (Chinese New Year), you may buy various New Year dates in history.
Or, if you’re a sports fan, you may buy the date your team won the championship. When LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA Finals on the 19th of June, 2016, it was a historic moment for the all fans and the city of Cleveland.
Why you want to own dates on the blockchain
The importance of many historical dates is indisputable, which is why they must be preserved on the blockchain. The blockchain prevents censorship and tampering, and ensures events are remembered accurately.
Whether you choose to buy an important personal date or invest in a monumental date in history, owning it as an NFT guarantees authenticity and prevents the information from ever getting lost. The blockchain’s transparency means that everyone can see what lies beneath each of the transactions engraved in the network.
This is why we believe owning the date the Berlin Wall fell would be so symbolic and impactful. Think about it:
- Behind the wall, the Stasi controlled and censored everything, including speech, press and arts.
- When the Berlin Wall fell, not only Berlin but the entire world became more transparent. No longer could things be kept in the dark. Do you see that event parallels the blockchain?
How much would such NFTs be worth?
We can’t pinpoint with 100% accuracy how much $HSY it will take to win auctions for some of the most popular dates in history. But we do expect high demand for vital dates in history, such as the date the Wright Brothers took flight or the date the Roman Empire fell.
- If you’re looking for ideas on what dates you should try to buy, check out this list of the 50 most important dates in history.
If you buy dates with personal meaning to you, like the day your child was born, it’s more about sentimental value than an investment. Although that date may not sell on the secondary market for a ton of money, it will bring you a lot of value — in the form of fond memories and smiles.
Once the NFThistory platform goes live, we’ll have more details on how much certain dates will fetch on the open market. And we’ll be sure to provide you with helpful data. In the meantime, OpenSea auction prices can help shed some light on what to expect, but remember that we’re building a unique use case for NFTs here. So, it’s hard to tell just how much $HSY they’ll sell for.
But we can tell you this: When you buy a date on the NFThistory platform, you’ll own something nobody else will have. If it’s a popular date, it could have tremendous value — as you’ll be the sole owner of the scarce NFT and you’ll get to dictate the terms of a sale.
